Dear Students,
We invite you to apply for membership in Dobro Slovo, the National Slavic Honor Society. Membership is based on demonstration of a serious interest in things Slavic by having taken a minimum of 4 semesters worth of course work in subjects pertaining to the Slavic languages, history, literature, and/or political systems, and by earning at least a B+ in all of them while maintaining an overall average of B . You do not have to be a major or minor to be inducted.
If you think you might be eligible, please complete the attached form listing the relevant courses you have already successfully completed, as well as your name, student ID # and email address, and return it as soon as possible to your instructor or bring it to my office in Scott Hall room 236. If you are selected, you will be notified by email. Members receive an honor society pin, a certificate, a membership card, and brochures. There will be an induction ceremony and celebration in late April or early May. Since it is an honor society, we will make every effort to have it listed on your transcript and in the graduation program for graduating seniors.
Should you be accepted, there is a $25.00 initiation fee which must be paid by check. A word about the $25.00 initiation fee. The initiation fee has not been increased since 1986, despite repeated increases over the years in postage, printing costs for Certificates, membership cards and brochures, and the ever-increasing cost of our Society pins.
Complete this Course List form and return it to your instructor or to Prof. Pirog in Scott 236.
Dobro Slovo - The Slavic National Honor Society
A Brief History of Dobro Slovo
Dobro Slovo was originally founded as a local Slavic Honorary Society on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley on October 29, 1926. In 1963, with the help and encouragement of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European languages- AATSEEL, Dobro Slovo became the National Slavic Honor Society.
There are now over 130 local chapters with a total membership of 6,200. Dobro Slovo serves as a means for the recognition of academic excellence in the study of Slavic languages, literature, history, and culture. The Society serves as an incentive for scholarly interest in Slavic life and culture. The National Slavic Honor Society has been patterned after other existing honorary organizations. The Key of the Society is as representative of academic excellence in Slavic studies as the Phi Beta Kappa is for academic studies as a whole.
