- Polish Cultural Foundation of Clark Scholarships
Part of the Polish Cultural Foundation's mission was to establish a scholarship fund for aspiring and deserving students of Polish descent. Upon receiving an endowment from the Estate of Lubomir and Irena Zabilski, the Board of Trustees chartered a committee to develop a protocol to assure a viable system for awarding scholarships and to implement same. Subsequently other endowments and contributions to the fund followed.
Essentially, a committee of 11 was formed of Foundation Trustees and general membership to laddered 3 year terms. Of this committee 4 were identified as officer positions: Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Treasurer and a Secretary, the remaining being members of the committee.
A policy for responsibly investing contributions received into government and high grade corporate funds was established. The number of scholarships awarded being determined by the interest or dividends generated by the invested principal as of December 31st of the year immediately preceding an academic year. No part of the principal amount may be used for scholarship awards.
Qualifying factors for consideration of applicants are that:
- They have completed their freshman year of undergraduate studies.
- They must be a US citizen or permanent resident living in New Jersey
- They must be of Polish descent.
- They must have a GPA of 3.0 or better.
- They must be a full time student.
- They must show a need for financial assistance.
In addition, the applicant must provide two letters of recommendation; provide a written essay on a subject selected by the committee and avail themselves to be interviewed.
After a review of all applications by the committee those candidates showing the most potential are selected for in-person interviews following which the committee determines who the scholarship recipients shall be.
