Placement tests

You will have 2 hours to complete the Russian Placement Test. Read the instructions below for information on how to access and complete the exam.

1. Before you begin the test, be sure you know how to add and use a Russian language keyboard.
2. Log into placement.elearning.rutgers.edu
3. Navigate to the world language drop-down menu.
4. Select the Russian test.

Adding & Using a Russian Language Keyboard

Mac - newer version (OS X Yosemite or later)

  1. Open System Preferences from the menu.
  2. Click on "Keyboard" and make sure that the box "Show Keyboard & Character Viewers in menu bar" is selected.
  3. Click the "Input Sources" tab in the window and click the plus sign at the bottom of the white box on the left.
  4. Select "Russian" and click "Add."
    • An alternative keyboard with a phonetic layout that you may prefer is "Russian - Phonetic" in the same menu. The layout is more similar to the English keyboard.
  5. To change the language from English to Russian, click the flag in the top right corner of your screen and select Russian. To view the virtual keyboard, click "Show Keyboard Viewer.

Mac - older versions

  1. Click the Apple icon in the top left corner of the menu bar, click on "System Preferences."
  2. Open "Language and Text."
  3. Select "Input Sources."
  4. Check off the box called "Russian."
    • An alternative keyboard with a phonetic layout that you may prefer is "Russian - Phonetic" in the same menu. The layout is more similar to the English keyboard.
  5. Click on Keyboard Shortcuts.
  6. Turn on the Virtual Keyboard.
  7. Open the "Keyboard and Text Input" menu on the left hand side of the window.
  8. Activate shortcut keys to switch between languages (optional).
  9. To change the language from English to Russian, click the flag on the top right corner of your screen to select Russian.
  10. Activate the Virtual Keyboard by click "Show Keyboard Viewer."

Windows 7 or later

  1. Click Start → Control Panel → Change keyboard or other input methods.
  2. Click on "Change Keyboards."
  3. Click the "Add" button on the right.
  4. Scroll down to and check off the box for "Russian."
  5. Click "Okay" on each window to close the Control Panel.
  6. To switch to the Russian language, look at the bottom of the right corner of your screen (near the time). There will be "EN" for English. Click "EN" to select "RU" for Russian.
  7. To open the on-screen keyboard, click "Start." Type "On Screen Keyboard" into the search bar and it should appear in the "Programs" results.
    • If you prefer a phonetic keyboard layout more similar to the English one, you can download a phonetic keyboard at here.

If you are unable to type in Russian directly on the exam, you have the option to upload a Word document to the question. Instructions for using the Russian keyboard in Microsoft Word are below:

  1. Open Microsoft Word. Your computer may automatically revert back to English if is it in the Russian setting. To change the language to Russian in the Word document, keep the document open and change the language to Russian by clicking the "EN" button on the bottom right of your Taskbar and changing it to "RU."
