Prospective Students

Majoring in REELL can take you where you want to go!

Russian majors at Rutgers experience all of the benefits of a small liberal arts college from within a major research university: small classes, instruction and advising by award-winning faculty, individual attention, and a strong sense of community. Often beginning with no previous knowledge of Russian language, students with degrees in Russian leave Rutgers ready for a globalized world. Our students gain essential skills that accompany an education in the humanities: critical thinking, analysis, writing, and interpretation. They gain specialized knowledge of another language, culture, and history. And the great books we explore ask probing questions about the meaning of life and the world today that encourage us to live more deeply as we confront similar questions in our lives.

The unfortunate recent escalation in tensions between Russia and the West demonstrates the growing importance of Russian studies in the geopolitical arena. After Rutgers, some of our students have gone on to work in the U.S. government or have joined the Peace Corps; others have entered graduate programs in literature, creative writing, film, and international affairs.  Many are pursuing careers in fields like marketing, consulting, information technology, and law.

Bridget MacAvoy came to Russian through an encounter with Dostoevsky: “Reading Crime and Punishment in high school sparked an interest in Russian literature, language, and culture that has been unquenchable ever since… there’s a distinctly soul-rending, philosophical (and, yes, depressing) quality to Russian literature that I find extremely fascinating.”
